At the invitation of the Government of Papua New Guinea (PNG) and the Autonomous Bougainville Government, the United Nations Department for Political Affairs (UNDPA) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) jointly carried out a weapons assessment in Bougainville in November-December 2012, using ISACS to support the exercise.  The purpose of the assessment was to evaluate the extent to which the weapons used during the Bougainville crisis of 1989-1998 have been disposed of and the impact that remaining weapons are having on peace and security on the islands that make up the Autonomous Region of Bougainville.  The satisfactory completion of the weapons disposal process is an important condition for the conduct of a referendum on the political future of Bougainville that will be held sometime between 2015 and 2020.
