The German Armed Forces (Bundeswehr) Verification Centre invited the ISACS Inter-Agency Support Unit to support a “Physical Security & Stockpile Management (PSSM) Course for National Coordinators on Small Arms and Light Weapons and Conventional Ammunition (SALW / CA)” held in Geilenkirchen, Germany, on 7-17 March.

This was the first training course to focus on national SALW / CA Coordinators in OSCE countries receiving assistance on PSSM and was desinged to enhance their capacity to maximise existing resources and assistance received.

16 technical officers from 11 countries took part in the training — Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, FYROM, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Serbia and Ukraine.

In addition to a comprehensive training on the theory and practice of PSSM, participants were introduced to ISACS and trained to use the ISACS Assessment Tool to conduct assessments of national SALW control policies and practices.  Participants used a checklist generated by the ISACS Assessment Tool to conduct a practical assessment exercise at a Bundeswehr PSSM training site.

Based on the success of this first training, the Bundeswehr Verification Centre plans to make this an annual training exercise.
